Passage
Coral reefs are among the most diverse ecosystems on Earth, supporting roughly a quarter of all marine species. Despite covering less than one percent of the ocean floor, they provide food and shelter for thousands of organisms. However, rising sea temperatures have triggered widespread coral bleaching, a process in which corals expel the algae living in their tissues, causing them to turn white and become vulnerable to disease. Scientists warn that without significant reductions in carbon emissions, most of the world's reefs could disappear within a few decades.
